Full mouth reconstruction is really a broad term that describes when a patient has had multiple dental problems throughout their life such as missing teeth, shifted teeth, worn and cracked teeth and really the only option we have left at this point is to treat the whole mouth. We need to make such drastic changes for the patient that we can't do it on a tooth-by-tooth basis anymore. There are several ways that we can accomplish this for a patient. Sometimes our problem is just with tooth structure and broken fillings but the foundation is good, the bone is good, the roots of the teeth are good, the structure is good, and into this patient we would do full mouth crown and bridge.
We talk to the patient. Find out what exactly their long terms goals are and what they want to accomplish. And from there we plan our case out usually involving doing some diagnostic work prior. We take a lot of photos, take models of the patient's mouth, work with our laboratory, and really plan out, taking the patient from where they are to where we need them to be to restore optimal health for them. With the full-mouth reconstruction, it can be a life changing experience because most of the time we are undoing years of dental problems and getting that patient back to a state of optimal health.
